At the Guanling Fingerling Breeding Base in Duanqiao town, Anshun, Guizhou province – operated by Guizhou Modern Fisheries Group, a subsidiary of State-owned Guiyang Agricultural Investment Group – schools of sea bass fry are being raised, marking the end of Guizhou's long-standing reliance on externally sourced fingerlings.

Guizhou Modern Fisheries has established a full-chain technical system covering broodstock introduction, broodstock breeding, fertilized egg incubation, larval rearing, and standardized fingerling production.

To address long-standing challenges facing Guizhou's sea bass farming sector – such as heavy dependence on external fry supply, high transportation costs, and unstable survival rates – Guizhou Modern Fisheries has partnered with Huazhong Agricultural University and South China Agricultural University.

It has also collaborated with leading seed enterprises, including Sanshui Baijin and Liang's Seed Industry in Guangdong province, introducing high-quality breeds such as "Youlu No 3", along with advanced technologies. By adapting to Guizhou's variable aquatic environment, influenced by seasonal and weather changes, and through repeated trials, Guizhou Modern Fisheries has developed a breeding technology system suited to local conditions.

"We currently operate two breeding bases in Guanling and Kaiyang, both equipped with stable and large-scale production capacity. The survival rate of our fingerlings remains above 45 percent," said the head of the Guanling base. The locally bred sea bass fry are now supplied to key aquaculture regions across the province, receiving strong market feedback. "The fry are vigorous and highly adaptable, and grow quickly once established in local waters."

More than 5 million high-quality sea bass eggs – produced through a combination of in-house breeding and introduced broodstock – are currently being incubated at the Guanling and Kaiyang bases, showing strong and healthy growth.
