State-owned enterprise in Guiyang takes aim at food waste

Guiyang Industrial and Commercial Investment Group, a State-owned conglomerate in Guiyang, Guizhou province, has waged a campaign against waste since August.

The dining hall is a significant place for the campaign, where workers are educated about the importance of cherishing and saving food. The investment group has also taken extraordinary measures to prevent employees from wasting food.

The slogan "practice thrift, oppose waste" is repeatedly displayed on the LED screens and video walls at the groups' subsidiaries. The conglomerate also uses its official WeChat account, website, QQ chat groups and posters to promote concepts such as "cherishing food," "living a healthy life" and "having good dietary habits."

Guiyang Industrial and Commercial Investment Group encourages its workers to bring their own tableware and only take the food they need. The management of dining during events such as receptions, conferences and training activities has also been improved.

A strict supervision system, including on-site inspection and a hotline for reporting wasteful dining behavior, has been launched to ensure the campaign's effectiveness.

Plans are in place to create a dining hall management system that will require the canteen to prepare a reasonable amount of food and purchase ingredients based strictly on what is needed.
